Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert a number to Roman numerals?
- Combine I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000), starting with the largest value. For example, 58 is LVIII: 50 + 5 + 3.
- Why is 4 written IV and 9 written IX?
- A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted: IV is 5 − 1 and IX is 10 − 1. The standard subtractive pairs are IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM.
- What number is MMXXVI?
- MMXXVI is 2026: M + M + X + X + V + I = 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1.
- Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
- Standard Roman numerals have no symbol for zero. This converter supports whole numbers from 1 to 3999; 3999 is MMMCMXCIX.
- Why do some clocks use IIII instead of IV?
- Some clock faces traditionally use IIII for four. This converter uses standard subtractive notation, so four is IV.
